István Koloss, Organist (1932-2010)
At the Academy of Music he studied under
Professor Ferenc Gergely and István Szelényi. He successfully completed Marcel
Dupré's Improvisation Course in 1963 and Fernando Germany's Master Course in
1972. Besides all major Hungarian towns he gave concerts in Austria, United
Kingdom, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
He held several courses in
Budapest, Győr, the Music Academy of Vienna and Ratzeburgh. Since 1963 he has
been the organist of the
Saint Stephen Basilica and Artistic Director of the summer organ concert series.
He teaches organ and composition at the Sacred Music Conductor
Training Institute.
His oeuvre mainly consists of
sacred music. His compositions are well known in and outside of Europe, many of
which are available as CD, radio and video recordings. Two of his symphonies,
his piece on Saint Francis's Canticle of the Sun and his Organ Concerto, were performed
at the Assisi Music Festival.
Was honoured with the Pro Arte Assisi award and the Knight's
Cross of the Hungarian Republic in 1982.
On the Sunday 10 o'clock
Holy Mass and on other important religious events the choir is accompanied by
István Koloss on organ.
After a prolonged illness, Isvtán Koloss passed away 11 April
2010. May he rest in peace.
